THE PROCESS
Step 1:
CONSULTATION
Consultation:
Come to the salon with their hair washed and dried naturally to do a consultation on their natural hair.
Do not colour or bleach the hair before the treatment, you can do colour services right after the OXO if the hair is not being recovered.
Determine the parameters for the clients hair:
- Flatiron selection and temperature
- Use of Heat device or not
- Care Product required for process
- OXO Product development time
- Amount of pulses required to get max shine
Hair Categories
- Natural and healthy hair curly from the root to ends.
- Blonde Dyed/Bleached dry and damaged hair full head
- or strong virgin roots with poor ends.
- Hair ends that went through chemical processes such as Keratin or OXO and natural strong regrowth roots.
Step 2:
WASH HAIR & APPLY TREATMENT
Wash the hair with OXO cleansing and PH9 Prep shampoo to get rid of any impurities or styling aids used on the hair. Do NOT apply a conditioner, comb the hair and use a towel and hairdryer to get rid of excess water.
Using a fine tint brush, apply OXO at about 1 cm from the roots avoiding contact with the scalp, then back comb as close as possible without touching the scalp.
Once you have selected your development time and application has been done you can now use your heat device for the selected period. (Refer to timetable)
FLAT IRON
In order for the flat iron to work with the OXO Smoothing Treatment, it has to heat up and remain on the displayed temperature. It should be designed for smoothing and should not lower its thermostat’s temperature when using for long periods of time. We recommend titanium plates for strong curly ethnic hair and ceramic will be suitable for thin, blonde and damaged hair.
HEATING DEVICE
When it comes to strong, textured, ethnic or curly hair, we use a heating device to assist the process. Heat makes parts move faster, this will help the material absorb all the way into every strong thick hair and soften the bonds. a Climazon or Infrared will NOT be used on blonde hair.
TIPS
- Dry the hair and apply OXO with two stylists to save time.
- Ends are always treated separately if not healthy do not apply a heat device to fragile ends pull product to ends last 30min when lifeless and recovering at the cool down stage of 30min.
- OXO Care products are additional barriers to protect fragile hair and OXO Active oil should be considered when doing major recovery work.
Step 3:
COMPLETELY REMOVE TREATMENT
- Rinse to remove the OXO treatment, then proceed to do a wash. The cleaner the hair from product the less smoke will be in the salon when processing with a flatiron.
Dry the hair and divide into four sections using alligator clips – preparing the customer for the next and most important stage – straightening the hair with the flat iron.
TIPS
- For Root fills you can offer a Mask and or Active Oil for a intense moisture ends recovery on mid to ends before the flat ironing process.
- For Blonde or grey hair we lower the flatiron from 230’c and select the correct temperature to avoid discolouration. For every click you are lowering you need to increse the amount of pulses
Step 4:
OXO FLAT IRON METHOD
Select your professional flatiron plates, we use ceramic or grey, Blonde or damaged and recovering lifeless hair with no movement and a titanium will be suitable for strong textured and curly hair. The most important thing to note is to use a professional flatiron that does not lower its internal thermostat when working on high temperatures of long periods of time.
We also decide on the flatiron temperature suitable for the condition of the hair, please note we use as a rule between 200 – 230’c when working on root areas and strong textured hair and reduce this heat setting on fragile hair. High temperatures with wrong flatiron plates can affect the change of colour. You need to find the happy medium for grey or blonde hair.
Divide the hair into neat sections and using a tension comb at a 90° angle, take a row of hair, pull the hair (not yank) until there is tension and insert the row into the flat iron, placing the flat iron as close to the scalp as possible without touching it.
Without pressure close the iron (do not squeeze) on the hair, allowing for a smooth pulse movement up and down the row. Iron in a 5 cm segments, back and forth with a semi closed iron for about 30 seconds.
How do you know when ironing a section is completed? Look for that maximum shine and also test your section by wetting and finger-drying it to see if your parameters are correct or you need to increase your amount of pulses, improve your tension or increase decrease your temperature of the flatiron.
Complete five seconds or or pulse and recomb the hair as we work on neat straight rows when ironing and checking for the maximum shine.
Repeat ironing each section until maximum shine appears remember you work first on the roots as this area will be the strongest you will hang around here longer. Then you move over to the mid lengths then once you are done with the whole section only move on to the ends with thicker pieces if fragile.
1. Roots
2. Mid-Length
3. Then Ends
TIPS
- If the ends of the hair are curly, iron well and stay on the ends and seal them until the hair has the desired nutrient shine. count for 5 sec and repeat until you see shine or closure of cuticles.
- Use the First row as a test by spraying water to the section you have completed and finger dry it to see your results.
Step 5:
RINSE HAIR AND ASSESS THE RESULTS FOR CORRECTIONS
Once you have finished processing the hair with the flatiron go back to the basin and rinse the hair when you have taken your client back to the chair hand-dry her hair with your hairdryer, at this stage you should be checking for any spots that you have missed.
If a correction is needed it means you have failed to maintain tension and/or to keep the strands neatly combed with the tension comb during the ironing stage…
No need to worry!
While the customer is still in your salon chair,
- Repeat the flat iron process immediately without re-applying your product. Separate the sections neatly and repeat the ironing technique where you have missed a section or it is still puffy
- If a correction is needed on another day then you WILL have to re-apply OXO product and perform the treatment ONLY on the sections which need correction
TIP
- Re-applying OXO for performing a correction poses no danger, however, it is not recommended to straighten the hair more than 3 times in 12 month
- Finish the hair with a Sealing oil or our Keratin Spray.
